Bamboo Forest: A Feminine Twist on Traditional Korean Furniture

A Unique and Mysterious Closet Design by Sang Yoon Kim

This product is a result of a project that aims to create new traditions by blending Korean traditional furniture with high-tech engineering. Inspired by the image of a woman hiding pottery in a bamboo forest, Sang Yoon Kim has transformed a traditional open storage closet into a more feminine and mysterious piece.

The Bamboo Forest closet stands out with its unique design and innovative features. The top wood panel and the lowest panel are drilled with numerous small holes, which are then connected by flexible strings, creating the appearance of a string curtain. The intricate details of the wood panels connected with strings resemble sewing, adding to the overall charm of the design.

What sets the Bamboo Forest closet apart is its ability to change its silhouette naturally through the binding method of the strings. This feature allows for customization and adaptability, making it a versatile piece of furniture that can fit any space or style.

The realization of this design involved a recomposition of a traditional furniture piece from a lady's perspective. The strings, intentionally imperfect, add a touch of whimsy and playfulness to the overall aesthetic.

With dimensions of 1,400(W) x 500(D) x 800(H), the Bamboo Forest closet is crafted using high-quality materials such as White Ash and Paulownia coreana wood. The use of steel plate laser process ensures durability and precision in the construction of this unique piece.

The Bamboo Forest closet has garnered attention and praise from women customers who appreciate its simplicity and elegance. It has become a popular choice among those seeking a touch of femininity and mystery in their homes.

The design was exhibited at the 2014 Craft Trend Fair held at COEX in Seoul. The project itself spanned from June 2014 to November 2014, with Listen Communication Co., Ltd. collaborating with Sang Yoon Kim to bring this design to life.

Sang Yoon Kim's research focused on identifying popular furniture types that are directly used in real life. Recognizing the changing lifestyle in Korea, where traditional furniture has lost its relevance, Kim aimed to infuse femininity and mystery into the old-style furniture.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was the development of strings that could achieve perfect restoration. The attention to detail and dedication to creating a flawless design paid off, resulting in the unique and visually stunning Bamboo Forest closet.

The Bamboo Forest closet has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2015. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill demonstrated in this remarkable piece of furniture.

Photographer Jae Yoon Kim is credited with capturing the essence and beauty of the Bamboo Forest closet in stunning visuals that showcase its unique features.
